Program Description

Brainstorming is a widely used idea-generating tool focusing on sharing ideas without judgment. However, since the 1950’s research has shown that typical brainstorms don’t work. In this fast-paced interactive workshop, explore new ways to generate ideas quickly and learn what research says about the ineffectiveness of typical brainstorms.  Bring a challenge or problem you have been working on and leave with lots of new ideas.

We will practice with several tools you can use in a variety of settings from staff meetings to working with clients.

Participants will

  • learn about the myths of brainstorming and understand current research on idea generation tools and techniques
  • practice using several idea generation tools
  • generate ideas for their own challenge and assist other participants with their challenge.

Additional background

The traditional brainstorming gained popularity when presented in a book published in 1948 based on practices at a popular advertising agency. However, since then researchers at Yale, UC-Berkeley, and others has shown the ineffectiveness of the traditional brainstorm, yet it still tends to be used by so many organizations in the U.S. The workshop is focused on helping practitioners develop a practice based on research versus popular myths in order to increase the creativity and innovation within their own organizations and with their clients.

Amy Climer


Creative, open, and inspiring Amy Climer brings her passion and energy to every group she facilitates. She is the owner of Climer Consulting and since 1995 has worked with hundreds of groups teaching creativity, experiential education, and leadership development. Her expertise lies in connecting with participants through interactive program design that focuses on the learner. She has worked with hundreds of groups including corporate teams, non-profit organizations, college students, and teachers. Additionally, she has worked with artists, entrepreneurs, and others coaching them to be more creative. Amy has a Master’s of Science in Experiential/Outdoor Education. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Leadership & Change where she is focusing her research on creativity development in teams.
